Gardening is great for kids!

Writer: Vicki WhitfieldVicki Whitfield

Most annuals and veggies are great for children to learn about gardening and are fast producers of flowers and vegetables so results would be seen quickly and stay interested. Now would be a great time to start a home garden or at least a small garden in containers and kids love playing in the dirt, spraying water and watching things grow. Make it a learning experience on how to care for plants with watering and when vegetables are ready to harvest, they get to eat what they grew or with annuals they can enjoy and pick the beautiful flowers. Try a few herbs and let them see spices and herbs just do not come in a bottle from the store such as basil and oregano for pizza sauce or spaghetti. They can make their own herb and spice blends to add to meals. Children are very tactile and like to touch plants think of different textures, stachys aka lamb’s ears feel just like a lamb’s ear. Try some lemon balm or lemon verbena to put in tea; if nothing else a cherry tomato plant will produce enough tiny tomatoes they will be amazed. And who knows this might start a whole new experience for them. At the store-We at Sutherlands want to make the shopping experience as easy and fast as we can while providing supplies and products our customers need. Our lawn and garden department is stocked with beautiful plants and our Garden Club members can purchase at Saturday sale prices all week.

Til next time, Vicki
